California: In the hands of Dr. John Dee and the Dark Elders, the book of Abraham the Mage could mean the destruction of the world as we know it. The most powerful book of all time, it holds the secret to eternal life. A secret more dangerous than any one man should ever hold. And Dee is two pages away from the knowledge that would bring the Dark Elders into ultimate power. His only obstacle? Josh and Sophie Newman--who are 8,000 miles away. Paris:After fleeing Ojai, Nicholas, Sophie, Josh, and Scatty emerge in Paris. The City of Lights. Home for Nicholas Flamel. Only this homecoming is anything but sweet. Perenell is still locked up back in Alcatraz and Paris is burning - with it, the last hopes for the human race. Nicollo Machiavelli, immortal author and celebrated art collector, is working for Dee. He's after them, and time is running out for Nicholas and Perenell. Every day spent without the book they age one year - their magic becomes weaker and their bodies, more frail. For Flamel the Prophesy is becoming more and more clear. It's time for Sophie to learn the second elemental magic. Fire Magic. And there's only one man who can teach it to her. Flamel's old student The Comte de Saint Germain--alchemist, magician, and rock star. Josh and Sophie Newman are the world's only hope. If they don't turn on each other first.
This is the second book in the series “The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel” and the chase across the world continues. After meeting Scathach, the Warrior Maiden, who looks like a teenager but is actually over two thousand years old, and awakening the awesome powers in Sophie, the four of them (Nicholas, Sophie, Josh and Scathach) escape to Paris. This is Nicholas’ birth place and he was supposedly buried here in 1418. They meet up with Nicholas’ old friend the Comte de Saint-Germain, who is also married to Joan of Arc, and hide out at his place. Their old foe Dr Dee is never far behind, and he teams up with Niccolò Machiavelli, who once freaked out the people of Italy but now runs the secret service in Paris. In their desperation to get hold of the final two pages of the book of Abraham the Mage, they release the great beast, the Nidhogg, a giant cross between a snake and a Komodo dragon with wings. Also included in the big battle that ensues are the three Disirs, three young girls also known as Valkyries. The Comte’s house and a suburb of Paris are almost destroyed, not to mention the catacombs of Paris. Josh Newman fights an epic battle with the Nidhogg, using Clarent, another sword of power, and turns him to stone. Sophie takes care of the Valkyries with her newly learnt powers in the Magics of Air and Fire. Scathach disappears into the Seine after being dragged in by the last of the Potamoi fishmen, Dagon. Will Peronelle, Nicolas’ wife, finally escape from Alcatraz? And if she does, will anybody be willing to come to her assistance? This is another great fantasy novel that races across continents and centuries. A good read for both young and old.
